    Description

This coin was issued under Fakhr al din
    Mohammad III
ibn Tughluq (AH 723-734, 1323-1333 AD),
    under the
    rule of Tughluqs
    ,
    Delhi Sultans.
It was minted in AH 726 (
    1325
    AD) in
    Madurai Region
    , southern India.
    Pandyas
    were ousted from Madurai by
    Chola Dynasty
    during the
    early 9th century
.   The city was fought over between Cholas and
    Pandyas during the
    12th century
, changing hands several times, until the
    early 13th century
    , when the
    second Pandyan Empire
    was
    established with
    Madurai
    as its
    capital
.  After the death of Kulasekara Pandian (1268-1308 AD), Madurai came under the rule of
    Delhi Sultanate.
    The region had
    changed to Madurai Sultanate
    in AH 734 (
    1333
    AD).  Madurai Sultanate was
    a short lived independent kingdom
    based in the city of
    Madurai
in Tamil Nadu, India.  The sultanate was proclaimed when the then
    viceroy of Madurai
    , Jalaluddin
    Ahsan Khan
    declared his independence
from the Delhi Sultanate.  Ahsan Khan and his descendants ruled Madurai and surrounding
    territories until
    1378
when the last Madurai sultan fell in battle against the forces of Vijayanagara Empire by Kumara Kampana.
