Mahmud Khilji (Ala ud Din Mahmud Shah) was Sultan of Malwa from 1436-69. He crowned himself Sultan after assassinating Mohammad. His reign was filled with 6 major battles and sieges.
Malwa translates to part of the body of Lakshmi (an ancient Hindu Goddess of weath and beauty). The Avanti ruled the area until 500 BC when it was annexed by the Mauryan Empire. The Abhira tribe from Eastern Iran migrated to Malwa in 151 AD. Under Chandragupta, Malwa became part if the Gupta Empire in 400 AD and then a separate Kingdom in 528 when they defeated the Huns. In 756 the Gujars advanced and in 786 the region was captured by the Rashtraukota Kings of the Deccan. From the mid tenth century it was ruled by the Paramoras and under the great king Bhoj, Malwa became the intellectual centre of India. Around 1200, Malwa was conquered by the Delhi Sultinate. In 1401 Dilawar Khan declared himself Sultan after Timur the Mongol attacked and the Sultinate broke into smaller states. In 1562, Akbar captured Malwa and made it a province. After 1700 the Marathos ruled but during the 1800’s the British set up the Holkar Dynasty from Indore and it became a Princely State. Indian independence came in 1947 and Malwa became part of the new state of Madhya Bharat and then merges into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
